Sketching and oil painting classes started for older people and participants from Cregg House. After a six-week course Father Noel Rooney from St. Joseph’s church presented certificates of achievement to a class of 14. As the class was so enjoyable and successful the participants wished to continue the art classes and they now attend every Thursday afternoon between 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Ann Banks a member of the art class entered two of her paintings in a competition and won 2nd and 3rd prize. Chris Kelly the tutor presented one of her paintings to the Australian Minister –Amanda Vanstone– and her husband who came and visited our room.
Interest in the art classes grew with more people wanting to join, so voluntary tutors –Lyn Stanford– and –Chris Kelly– took on an extra art class on Tuesday afternoons. 19 paintings were exhibited at the Hawkswell Theatre for the 2003 Beltaine Festival where they received an excellent response. The group have also undertaken cross border trips and various other trips and taken part in many award ceremonies.
